George Town Heritage Celebrations
George Town Heritage Celebrations is celebrated annually in July to mark the historic city being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through the celebrations, the diverse communities gather to celebrate and commemorate the momentous occasion.
The Heritage Celebrations is a yearly celebration to commemorate the inscription of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008. It celebrates the living heritage of George Town - its multicultural practices, traditional food, arts and crafts, as well as cultural festivities and arts events that highlight history and local cultural pride, and always takes place within the historic streets of George Town.
The local communities are always at the heart of the celebrations, as co-presenters, participants, performers, bearers of tradition, folklorists, and fellow revelers. And for two days each year, the audience is allowed intimate access to the living traditions of George Town as the communities open their hearts and homes to locals and visitors alike. The Celebrations also highlights especially rare or endangered traditions and art forms and reminds us of the value of heritage.
This year’s Heritage Celebrations 2016 will take place on July 7 to 9. It will feature the traditional sports and games of our local communities in George Town! Stay tuned for more info.
